pay to see your credit report Anymore!
Beginning Dec. 1, 2004, consumers in 13 western
states can order credit report annually from each of the major
credit bureaus: Eqifax, Experian and TransUnion at no charge.
The new program, which will be rolled out nationally
next year, was madated by Congress last year as part of the Fair
and Accurate Credit Transactions Act.
Under the new system, consumers in those 13 states
can order free reports through a central Web site. www.annualcreditreport.com,
by calling 877-322-8228, or by sending a written
request to: Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O.
Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281.
You can request reports from all three bureaus
at one time or spread them out over 12 months.
Free Reports will become available in 12 Midwestern
states beginning March 1. The program expands to Southern states
June 1 and to Eastern states in September. You'll still need to
pay a fee to get your credit scores.
To get a free copy of your credit report, you
must provide your name, date of birth, SSN, and your current and
previous address if you've moved within the past two years. After
giving this information, you will be asked to select one, two
or three of the credit bureaus whose reports you would like. You
will then be transferred to a Web page for one of the three bureaus,
where you will be asked to verify your identity.
The three credit bureaus warn consumers against
providing information to third parties that promise to get free
reports on their behalf.
